Bands on Friday: RALLEY (Köln, GER)

- English below -

When it got serious with our Popfest, we thought about which bands to invite and that we really wanted to have a German indie pop band in our line-up. That’s not that trivial, since indie pop is not a particular German genre. We came up with three bands, that we loved so much that we needed to have them at our debut. One was seeded (Woog Riots), one far too big (Throw That Beat...) and the last one had split up in 1999.
Their story started in 1997: Between the likes of Sabrina Setlur, Tic Tac Toe and Cappuccino there occurred a single on the radio that didn’t sound quite like German pop music. “Scheißegal, ob’s regnet oder nicht.” (ca.: Don’t give a shit whether it’s raining or not) “Zelten” was different and new. Lyrically and musically. An indie pop gem appeared from nowhere. Effortless and easy-going.
The debut album was made in the periphery of the Cardigans in Stockholm. But in 1999, shortly before the follow-up was released, the band had an accident on the way back from a video shoot in England. Heavily injured, the following years of recovery ended all plans and hopes. In 2002, singer Suzie Kerstgens and songwriter Sten Servaes founded the successor band KLEE, that moves along the line started by Ralley and has released brilliant singles like “Erinner Dich” (that was covered by The Wedding Present).
But in the one and a half year from 1997 to 1999, that Ralley existed, they made an impact quite like no other German Band. They were game-changing for a lot of other bands.
